At a staggering 1,600 acres, Ohio State’s Columbus campus is shockingly huge. To put that in perspective, that’s over three times larger than Disneyland in Anaheim, California, which is around 500 acres.
With a campus of that size, it’s no surprise OSU has such a large student body. Over 47,000 undergraduate students attend the university. If all those students spread evenly across campus, each would have about 1,483 square feet of space! That is a lot for one person.
Getting around a 1,600-acre campus like OSU’s takes some strategic planning. Students quickly learn the best transportation options to traverse the enormous grounds.
Walking is fine for short trips within a specific area, but trekking clear across campus can take up to 40 minutes at a brisk pace. Biking is popular, though finding an open rack to lock up bikes can prove tricky, especially around busy classroom buildings.
Campus buses running multiple daily routes are often the most convenient option. But during peak class change times, the buses can get jam-packed with 50+ students crammed on board. Standing shoulder-to-shoulder with strangers isn’t how most prefer to commute.
Electric scooters are another faster way for students to zip around the sprawl of campus. However, hurrying on crowded sidewalks and paths scattered with pedestrians has led to some annoyed shouts and close calls. Safety is a concern.
Driving personal cars is not advised because of the limited parking and frequent traffic jams. Unless students live far off campus, most try to avoid bringing cars. Parking passes and daily garage fees add up fast.
No matter how they choose to get around, OSU students adapt to expertly navigating all corners of the huge campus grounds. Regular routes become ingrained over time.

Popular nearby areas like the Short North Arts District and Arena District provide an abundance of shops, restaurants, art galleries, and vibrant nightlife. Students flock to casual eateries like Condado Tacos and Pint House Brewing Company to grab a bite. Bars like Fourth Street Bar and Grill are great spots for gathering over drinks with friends.
Downtown Columbus is also right next door to campus. Nationwide Arena hosts significant concerts and NHL games in addition to the famous OSU men’s ice hockey squad. The Greater Columbus Convention Center draws over one million visitors annually for various conferences and events. And community parks like Goodale Park and Bicentennial Park offer open green space amidst the towering city buildings and concrete.
The Ohio Theatre, Palace Theatre, and Southern Theatre provide Broadway show touring companies, live music acts, and big name comedy performances. The world-class Columbus Zoo and Aquarium exhibits over 10,000 animals. And historic neighborhoods like German Village provide local shops, cafes, and charm.
Between the endless amenities on campus and everything available just beyond campus borders in the city, OSU students have unlimited options for dining, shopping, entertainment, and nightlife without ever needing to leave Columbus.
A campus the size of a small town needs ample facilities and amenities to support the huge student body and staff population. And OSU takes full advantage of its sprawling grounds.
Numerous academic halls, libraries, recreation centers, and student housing complexes are spread across campus. Plentiful dining halls and restaurants feed hungry students, faculty, staff, and visitors. The OSU Wexner Medical Center and James Cancer Hospital take up an extensive section of the western part of campus. And, of course, acres upon acres of picturesque green quads, sporting fields, gardens, and wooded areas surrounding the buildings.
Some of the more notable campus landmarks include Ohio Stadium, where the beloved Buckeyes football team plays in front of 100,000 screaming fans; the stately Thompson Library which is one of the largest university library systems in the entire country; and Mirror Lake, which offers a scenic, relaxing spot to study or socialize.

Ohio State’s main Columbus campus dwarfs most other universities regarding sheer acreage. To put the scale into perspective:
While having abundant space allows OSU to offer first-rate facilities, academic programs, and top faculty, operating a campus this sprawling does have some drawbacks.
Getting around campus and traveling between classes can take substantial time when buildings are so spread out across the grounds. Even campus buses are needed just to reach academic halls on the opposite ends of campus in time for the bell. Long walks across campus in the cold Ohio winter winds aren’t enjoyable experiences.
The costs of maintaining and securing such a huge number of buildings and acres of land must also be immense. Daily expenses such as heating, cooling, electricity, WiFi, cleaning, landscaping, snow removal, classroom technology, and safety patrols for the enormous area require serious resources and budgeting.
With over 47,000 students plus thousands of faculty and staff, some students may feel detached or overwhelmed being immersed in such a large sea of people daily. Building a close-knit community can pose challenges on such a massive campus.
Nestled within Ohio State’s sprawling Columbus campus are hidden gems and little-known spots offering pleasant surprises. These secret spaces provide an escape from the hustle and bustle.
Tucked away between Sullivant Hall and the Thompson Library is the charming Literary Garden, featuring meandering brick pathways, vine-covered arbors, and whimsical bronze statues inspired by characters from children’s literature. This tucked-away oasis provides a peaceful outdoor respite spot between classes or meetings.
Another hidden find is the secret study lounge on the 4th floor of the 18th Avenue Library. Accessible only by a winding back staircase, this quiet room has expansive windows overlooking the Oval. It fills up fast during midterms and finals weeks as students discover its off-the-beaten-path location.
For those looking to further commune with nature on campus, the Chadwick Arboretum offers a slice of woodlands and trails spanning 25 acres. Winding dirt paths under a shady canopy of oak, hickory, and maple trees with native wildflowers growing below make it easy to forget you’re right next to the busy campus activity. It’s a perfect spot for a reflective walk alone or a meandering stroll with a friend.
With these hidden gardens, secluded study spaces, and pockets of nature, OSU’s sprawling campus has some delightful secrets waiting to be uncovered by new students and visitors willing to veer off the well-trodden main paths. Exploring beyond the standard routes reveals some of this university’s unique places.
One benefit of OSU’s large campus is that it provides plenty of green space for local Columbus wildlife to thrive.
Large mammals like white-tailed deer, groundhogs, red foxes, and even coyotes can be spotted wandering wooded areas along the campus perimeter. Squirrels and raccoons frequent the quads. Many species of songbirds flit among the trees, especially near Mirror Lake and along the Olentangy River wetlands, where ducks, herons, swallows, and other waterfowl gather.
Bats swoop over campus, hunting insects at night. And chipmunks scurry about stuffing their cheeks near sun-soaked benches.
Students love catching glimpses of all the campus creatures going about their daily routines around the buildings and landscaping. Organisms seem to adapt as well as the students!
OSU’s campus in the heart of Columbus is close to an array of remarkable destinations that provide perfect outings when students need a change of scenery from academics.
Just a quick trip from campus, the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium offers a walk on the wild side with thousands of exotic animal species in detailed natural enclosures, plus rides and shows for a full day of adventure.
For an interactive learning experience, the COSI science museum downtown allows students to explore topics like space, technology, and health through hands-on exhibits and demonstrations that bring science concepts to life.
To immerse in tranquil natural beauty, Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens transport visitors to paradise with collections of plants from rainforests, deserts, and palm houses surrounded by artful sculptures.
Art lovers can admire masterpieces at the renowned Columbus Museum of Art. History buffs can dive into Ohio’s past at the epic Ohio History Center. And the National Veterans Memorial and Museum provides a solemn yet meaningful opportunity to honor those who served.
With this variety of remarkable attractions right off campus, OSU students have endless options to complement their studies through entertainment, culture, nature, and thought-provoking experiences during their Columbus tenure.
It’s truly remarkable how much ground the main Ohio State campus occupies in Columbus. The largest college campus in Ohio, OSU’s campus doesn’t just house a university – it’s practically a city!
The university has room for everything on its grounds – cavernous sports stadiums, state-of-the-art research facilities, performing arts theaters, a hospital system, a student union, numerous acres of natural areas, and much more.
Navigating a campus of this enormous size certainly has its headaches, but OSU students ultimately get access to world-class faculty and unparalleled amenities thanks to the plentiful space. The university makes the most of its expansive area to create a dynamic living and learning environment.
Undoubtedly, OSU boasts the most significant single college campus in Ohio. Its sprawling Columbus grounds set it apart from any other university in the state.
